SymphonyTM Plus is the next generation of ABB’s acclaimed Symphony family of decentralized control systems, the world’s most widely used DCS for the power generation and water industries. ABB has more than 6,000 Symphony systems in operation worldwide, of which more than 4,000 are used in the power generation and water industries.
In the power and water industry, no other automation platform has such a wide range of applications as Symphony. For more than 30 years, ABB has developed the Symphony family to ensure that the next generation of products is compatible with the previous generation on the basis of continuous improvement – in line with ABB’s consistent policy of “progressive, not obsolete”. Symphony Plus has a comprehensive and standard set of control software and hardware to meet the needs of plant-wide automation. The PDP800 PROFIBUS interface module of S+ control system realizes the connection between HPC800 controller and Profibus device. This makes it easy to integrate smart devices such as smart transmitters, actuators and smart electrical devices (IEDs). The built-in information of each device can be used for control logic and higher level applications.
In addition to bringing a tighter and more reliable process control solution, the PDP800PROFIBUS solution reduces cabling and system footprint, thereby saving system installation costs. Using S+ engineering tool Composer to configure and maintain PROFIBUS networks and field devices, as well as related control strategies, can further reduce system costs.
Seamless integration of smart field devices
The HPC800 controller of the S+ control system integrates seamlessly with the field equipment through the PDP800 PROFIBUS interface module. This makes it possible to connect a large number of smart field devices from ABB and other third-party suppliers, including transmitters, actuators, motor control centers (MCC), flame monitoring equipment, smart electronics, and more. PROFIBUS I/O and related HPC800 control policies can be configured using ABB’s tried and tested function codes and the graphical S+ engineering tool Composer. In addition, this data can be provided to other S+ system nodes (such as controllers, operation stations, engineer stations, and information stations) via the redundant plant network (PN800).
PDP800 PROFIBUS interface module features include:
− PROFIBUS DP V0, V1, V2
− PROFIBUS PA devices are supported by connecting devices through DP/PA
− Supports 1-millisecond time labels for PROFIBUS DP V2 devices
− Supports PROFIBUS DP links in electrical and optical media
− PROFIBUS DP links up to 12 Mbps
− Optical PROFIBUS DP links up to 15 km away
Full I/O support
The PDP800 module helps the HPC800 connect to the S800I/O via the PROFIBUS DP V2. The S800 I/O covers all signal types, from basic analog and digital inputs and outputs to pulse counting and intrinsic safety applications. The S800 I/O’s event sequence function supports PROFIBUS DP V2 and marks the time tag at the source of the acquisition with a resolution of 1 ms.
In addition, the PDP800 supports HPC800 connection to S+ steam turbine control dedicated modules. In particular, the PROFIBUS V2 enables the HPC800 to support powerful turbine solutions including: Turbine protection (TP800), valve position control (VP800), generator automatic synchronization (AS800) and condition monitoring (MCM800).
Using fiber optic cables, PROFIBUS I/O modules and devices can be extended up to 15 km away from the PDP800 module. In addition, the PDP800 module can also be placed up to 3 km away from the HPC800 controller through redundant HN800 cable communication.
High reliability and availability
PDP800 supports full redundancy at all levels, including PDP800 modules, power supplies, PROFIBUS DP links, and the controller Communication Bus (HN800). All redundancy options are independent of each other to ensure the highest degree of availability and reliability.
