The relay measures voltage, though it is con-nected to the current transformers of the pro-tected object, see block diagram. The earth-fault curent is measured on either side of theprotected object and the differential current isforced to flow through an external voltagedependent resistor Ru. The voltage thus cre-ated is measured by the relay.
The high impedance type diferential relay isstable for all types of faults outside the zoneof protection. The relay is stabilized bymeans of resistors in the differential circuitThe stabilizing resistors are integrated intothe relay.
The stability of the protection is based on thecircumstance that the impedance of a currenttransformer quickly decreases as the currenttransformer saturates. The reactance of theexcitation circuit of a fully saturated currenttransformer approaches zero and the imped-ance is purely winding resistance. By meansof the resistor in the differential current cir.cuit the secondary current fed by a non-satu.rated current transformer is forced to flowthrough the secondary circuit of a saturatedcurrent transformer.

The start level ofthe relay must be given sucha value, that no relay operation is obtained atfaults outside the zone of protection.
When a fault arises within the zone of protec-tion, both current transformers strive to feedcurrent through the differential current circuitand the relay operates.
Self-supervision
The relay incorporates a sophisticated self.supervision system, which increases theavailability of the relay and the reliability ofthe system. The self-supervision system con.tinuously monitors the hardware and the soft.ware of the relay, The system also supervisesthe operation of the auxiliary supply module.
Auxiliary supply voltageThe relay is provided with a built-in powersupply unit. The specified auxiliary voltagerange ofthe relay SPAE 0l0 is 80…265 Vac’de and the auxiliary voltage range of therelay SPAE 0ll is 18…80 V de.
